The 4x5 negative is about four times the size of a 35mm negative and, therefore can hold more information. Also, the films chemistry plays a big role. I'm sure you have heard of a film's "speed" or ISO/ASA rating. The lower the ISO/ASA = the "slower" the film = the finer the grain = the more detail that can be recorded. It doesn't matter if using BW or color film.

I certainly appreciate and wish I could share your optimism. Perhaps I've been in my line of work for too long. The only poll that matters is the one on election day. While I agree that Zerobama's election is not a fait accompli, I still believe it to be likely no matter who the 'Republican' nominee will be. Why vote for Democrat-lite when you can vote for the real thing? After all (paraphrasing here), Miss Rand said that the candidate with the most consistent philosophy will win. Still, I reserve the right to change my opinion as the facts warrent.

Your comparisons are, for the most part, irrelevant and meaningless. Not taking inflation into account. . . wow. For instance: Your $8000 heating oil fill up would have cost you over $1500 in 1972 (using 2010 dollars.) Conversely, $500 (1972) would buy about $2600 in goods today. Something else must be going on, most likely taxes. Inflation alone can't account for the tax increases. Living in a blue state can. Solution: Move to a lower tax state. One with job growth. One where you would have greater opportunity to grow your business. I, myself, am considering a move to Texas. I'm sure most everyone here is well aware of the dire condition of the USA. The choice between a marxist empty suit and Democrat-lite is not an appealing one. As the saying goes; good men do nothing, evil succeeds. One of the greatest things to happen in the political world is the advent of the tea party movement. Perhaps even do a video project for them. Are the tea partiers perfect? Hardly. One of the films I saw at the Free Minds Film Festival this past weekend was 2081, a short film adapted from Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron. The story presents a future America where, through the efforts of the Handicapper General, everyone is equal. Later, I came across this video (via Powerline). Wow. Some animals are more equal than others, eh, Mr. Bullhorn? As it happens, I was able to have a bit of fun with a couple of the willing dupes. I know this video doesn't precisely relate to the previous two. Three pieces of a larger whole that I fear will lead to. . . well, if you thought the riots in England were something. . . . . .

I saw it Saturday at the Free Minds Film Festival showing at U. of Colorado, Colorado Springs. A rather enjoyable documentary. It was positive and optimistic in describing Objectivisms (albeit slowly) growing influence on the culture.

Reporter (while recording voice track for the story): "There are two types of radiation, cesium and iodine. . . " Me (overhearing this): "What??!!! No!!!" R: "Huh?" M: "Cesium and iodine are elements, they have radioactive isotopes. They are not types of radiation." R: "Well, that's what (citing some expert) said." M: "Your expert is wrong." (Further exchange that I don't recall) M: "Didn't you ever take a chemistry class?" R: "No." M: "Hmph." I don't remember the outcome as I didn't work on that story.

The contradictions, I believe, are largely by design. Career criminals don't seem to let a few laws get in the way of their business. When otherwise reasonable citizens can be turned into criminals by the stroke of a pen, or threatened with more laws, they are easier to rule.

A respectable performance considering it's showing in only 300 movie houses. Of particular note is the per screen average. It beats all but the top two pictures. Perhaps more theaters will pick up the movie with numbers like that. The coming week will tell.

Upon further reading, I realize my response to the OP probably did not answer his question. These local currencies appear to be mostly marketing gimmicks. Here in COS, the Downtown Development Authority came up with a scrip, exchangeable for US dollars, to be used for purchases at downtown businesses. I don't remember what it was called or if it is still in use. As for Detroit, it's going to take a lot more than a few "cheers" to keep a sinking ship afloat. As an addendum to my original reply, here is the text of a bill introduced into the Virginia legislature. It apparently died in committee.

I have seen only a little of this. It would seem to stem from a misinterpretation of Article I, Section 10 of the US Constitution: "No State shall [. . . ] coin money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; [. . . ]." An item I read a while back claimed that states could create their own currencies as long as they were of gold or silver, citing the above Article and Section as authority. I haven't found that item yet.
