  1. FINAL Presidential Poll for 2012

Wow, I sure hope you're right. If that's the case, there's going to be a lot of crow pie eating on 11/7.
  2. I was a fan (admitedly casually) of Gary Johnson before he was the LP candidate. He talked a lot about restraining government, his track record vetoing bills as a NM governor, his staunch opposition to bailouts, and the like. I follow him on Facebook, and 90% of the stuff his campaign posts is either some winning about the fact that he's not invited to the debates or pacifist drivel that sounds straight out of Ron Paul. Why is it that Libertarians emphasize isolationism / pacifism / defeatism so much? How come they don't talk more about the economy, government creep, social policies, etc? It's like Johnson underwent a brain swap with Ron Paul upon obtaining the LP nomination.
  3. Objectivist Dropouts

Peikoff isn't exactly a shining example, no question about it. I used to subscribe to his podcast and once he said it was perfectly ethical to buy a cheap seat at a concert and then move to a more expensive seat that had not sold.
  4. FINAL Presidential Poll for 2012

I still think Obama will win. If anything, Sandy is going to make him look more "presidential", what ever that means. Hopefully, I'm going to be proven wrong.
  5. What did you think of the third Presidential debate?

Wow, Obama is back to 64% on Intrade. Scary.
  6. Not sure if this has been discussed here. It's old news, but I just heard of it. At first glance, it seems like it's great news.
  7. What did you think of the third Presidential debate?

Obama is still ahead (but less so) on intrade.
  8. What did you think of the third Presidential debate?

    Obama is down on Intrade.
  9. What did you think of the second Presidential debate?

I thought Romney was pretty weak. It might not matter - I have that pet theory that what helped Romney during the 1st debate wasn't that he "won" it but rather that he was simply able to introduce himself to a bunch of people who had only heard of him from very biased media. So maybe his actual performance is not the key determinant (within reason).
  10. Not gonna happen.
  11. http://gawker.com/59...-obamas-elected Awesome!
  12. What did you think of the Vice Presidential debate?

I suspect "public opinion" will say that Biden won, but from a strategic standpoint, I think Ryan accomplished his goals.
  13. Happy Birthday to Betsy Speicher

    Happy Birthday Betsy!
  14. What did you think of the first Presidential debate?

I don't see how we could get a US default without major civil unrest, here and abroad. A US default would start by destroying most US pension funds, which are required by law to invest in US bonds. It would equally destoy US banks, for the same reasons It would cascade across the globe instantaneously. It would be followed by defaults in all other countries which have major reserves in dollars, i.e., close to the entire debitor world. Net creditors would suffer major unrest at home, which when you're talking of countries like China is unlikely to stay local. This would be followed by the failure of most large banks across the world. All that would result in recessions caused both by the collapse of US demand and by the unavailability of credit. Personally, I think high inflation is more likely, maybe followed after several years by a partial default. Even that would be traumatic.
  15. What did you think of the first Presidential debate?

Yeah, funny how those things happen. It's like France following the 2008 crisis: it had one quarter of negative growth followed by one quarter of 0.1% growth. Tadaaaa, no recession.
  16. Yes, the 300SL is a jewel. I'm a sucker for those cars with a long nose....
  17. I don't really follow cars so I doin't have a list of go-to sources. Where am I most likely to find plenty of photo coverage of the Paris car show? Thanks, Joss
  18. What did you think of the first Presidential debate?

    I agree with Carlos.
  19. Thanks. Love the Panamera Sport Turismo, and the design of the SLS. Not too keen on the F-type so far.
  20. 2012 Presidential Poll for October 2012

I'm surprised to see some people saying they would never vote for Johnson. I understand people prefering to vote Romney, for value reasons or because he has the best chances of beating Obama, but I'm puzzled by the "I would NEVER vote of support Johnson".
  21. It's very good. It brings a strong focus on the destructive regulations and policies that have shackled the banking sector for so long. I finally understood reading the book how mark-to-market accounting is so irrational. This is but one of many focus (foci?) Mr. Allison brings. Thanks to his experience as long time CEO of BB&T, he is able to bring many anecdotes and examples to illustrate the points he make. I highly recommend the book to everyone here. http://www.amazon.com/Financial-Crisis-Free-Market-Cure/dp/0071806776/
  22. Be prepared for a miserable 4 years

Oh, you know - "religion of peace", bank bailout / TARP, prescription drugs, Dollar debasement, etc. It's hard for me to get that excited about the difference.
  23. Be prepared for a miserable 4 years

The damage caused by Obama is hard to distinguish from the damage caused by Bush. The Tea Party held some promess at some point but they seem to have lost momentum or to have been preempted by Christians. Both Romney and Obama are appaling. Gary Johnson is somewhat better but he's going to be trampled over.
  24. We just received our copy, and my letter is published! This is what they published: "SIR – You explained the causation of events in Libya as follows: “One misguided extremist in America made the video, and another lot of misguided extremists in the Arab world picked on it.” That suggests the producers of the anti-Islam video are on the same moral footing as the mob that attacked the embassy. They are not. The people behind the video were perhaps moronic bigots. But the people who attacked the embassy were barbarous murderers. Free speech, by definition, protects the right to say stupid or offensive things. Joss Delage Seattle" This is the version I sent: "Sir - In your article titled "Murder in Libya", you say "One misguided extremist in America made the video, and another lot of misguided extremists in the Arab world picked on it". This draws an equivalency between the authors of the video and the mob that attacked the embassy. There should be none. On one hand the authors of the video were probably moronic bigots. On the other, the people who attacked the embassy were barbarous murderers. Free speech, by definition, protects the right to say stupid or offensive things. The US should take advantage of this event to iterate on this key point."
  25. That's a separate -entirely valid - question.
