  1. Recommended TV series?

If you like World War II setting, I highly recommend HBO's Band of Brothers produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It has the same feel as Saving Private Ryan and it's a true story of American paratroopers who fought in Europe during World War II. It was very well acted. I also love HBO's From The Earth To The Moon. Also produced by Tom Hanks. It is about the Apollo space program. Very inspiring and well acted as well. Currently, I'm watching HBO's The Pacific. Also produced by Tom Hanks. It is about the battle of American marines with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II. I am no fan of Tom Hanks, it just happened that most of these TV series that he produced are my favorite.
  2. Jane Eyre (2011)

I rented this movie due to lack of better choices at redbox. But my it was worth seeing! I enjoyed mostly the dialogues and the acting in this film. Michael Fassbender (Xmen: First Class) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland 2010) did an outstanding lead roles. Warning: A few spoilers below Despite the dark scenes and plot of the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is truly a classic!

Did anybody noticed the movie release date: April 15?
  5. Inception (2010)

I am curious as to what most of the people at The Forum think about the sense of life of the main characters in this movie.
  6. Agora (2009)

Great news! You can pre-order the dvd that will be released on October 9 at Amazon. It's definitely worth buying.
  7. Agora (2009)

This movie was released in 2009 and did not reached the U.S. until 2010. And the movie is showing at selected theaters only. I highly recommend this movie because the plot of it is Reason versus Faith and the consequences when faith prevails in a society. The movie is suppose to be a true story. Although I haven't read much about the main character in the movie, Hypatia (which was greatly portrayed by Rachel Weisz), the sequence of the events in the movie was well done and the rational and the mystics were very well depicted. As soon as the movie ended, the first thing that came in to my mind was: OPAR - I need to read OPAR again. Warning: There are spoilers about this movie in this post. One of my favorite lines by Hypatia to Synesius: "You don't question what you believe. I must."
  8. Agora (2009)

Hello Betsy! May I please suggest Agora for review and rating? Thanks!
  9. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

I haven't read the novels nor the short stories but the movie is definitely entertaining. Superb acting of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. I highly recommend it!
  10. Sherlock Holmes 2009

Hello Betsy, I am curious as to what Objectivists think about this movie: Sherlock Holmes 2009 Thanks!
  11. Organic Foods

I have been curious on the purpose of eating organic foods. Does anybody have any reliable source on the reason of eating organic foods? I am very skeptical of all the "hogwash" on eating organic foods. Thanks in advance!
  12. Marathon

I love running. I love the feeling of the wind on my face. It doesn't matter if it's 10 degrees Fahrenheit outside or if it's 80 degrees. It's that triumphant feeling of ending an 8 mile run that makes my day. I have never joined in any race in my life. I find running as the most selfish sports that I do. It's what I called "Lulu's" time. And I enjoy the solitude. Last Thursday I signed up on my first marathon in Duluth, Minnesota (Grandma's). The event challenged me... 26.2 miles. I'm not joining to compete but to challenge myself and to have fun. My ultimate goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I would like to hear your marathon experience/s, if you have one. I would also like to hear your strategies and the best marathon you have ever done.
  13. Organic Foods

Thank you for all the interesting posts. I would like to share a reply I received from a good friend of mine: Apparently there weren't any scientific evidence proving that eating organically grown foods is better for your health. It might taste good to some people but then again, taste varies in individuals. If you can afford organic foods, there is nothing to loose eating them. Therefore, I decided to continue eating non-organic foods. However, I just become more conscious on some of the food additives in the ingredients. Here's a link that might help : Food Additives Buen Provecho!
  14. Jonathan Livingston Seagull

I also read this book when I was young, thirteen years old. It was a required book for us to read in our English Literature class in the Philippines, along with The Little Prince. I liked the first part of the book when Jonathan left the flock and strived to achieve his flying skills. I never understood the mystical part of it after reading the book for the first time. At that time I disregarded the mystical part of the book. Eventually, I bought Richard Bach's other fiction writings. Then I discovered that he is a mystic. I still have a copy of the book because the non-mystical part of it is inspiring. It inspired me to leave the mediocre and collective flock (the Philippines).
  15. Theater

I have heard alot of positive comments about their plays in Ashland. Although it is quite far from Portland, I am considering to watch at least one play. Thank you for the advice.
  16. Happy Birthday to Lu Norton

Thank you very much for the warm greetings. It has been quite a while since I logged in. I have been very busy. Mr. Royce that was a very delightful poem. I have never felt so great in my life. I haven't reached 30 yet and my health and career are already both doing so well.
  17. I will be going to New York this May 25th until the 31st. I have been there a few times. I visited the following: 1. Empire State Building 2. Chrysler Building 3. Statue of Liberty 4. Ellis Island 5. Metropolitan Museum of Art 6. Little Italy 7. China Town 8. Midtown and Downtown Manhattan I will be staying at Long Island, Valley Stream specifically. My plan is to visit Guggenheim Museum, watch Chicago The Musical, and to do outdoor activities such as leisure walking and jogging. Are there any public tracks around? Or a jogging friendly park where it's not crowded? I also prefer somewhere in a safe neighborhood. If you can suggest other activities to do, I will love to hear it.
  18. 300 (2007)

Beautiful movie! Although the Spartan costumes were inaccurate - I think I would prefer seeing half naked men with great bodies . They reminded me of what an ideal man should look like - tall, proud and great abs . After seeing the movie, the thought that stayed in my mind was - that is what a man should be and look like - proud of himself and his ability. Going back to the men's abs, which kept haunting me, I found this video clip of Lena Heady very funny. Where she mentioned that she was surrounded by flesh! (The video is in the 300 website - Making of 300 - Video Journals - 6: Lena Heady). I was so envious!
  19. Access Tutorial

I am reaching out to anyone living in Portland, Oregon, who can teach me to be proficient with Microsoft Access. I will be available in the weekends for private lessons. I can manage to arrange any weekday schedule if necessary. Access skill is very vital at my work. If you can provide any reference, please send me a private message. Also, please post any tips on how to learn Microsoft Access for beginners like me.
  20. Access Tutorial

I would say that I'm at the intermediate level both in Word and Excel. Excel is the next skill that I would like to enhance. But I think that will be easier than Access. As to driving - I can't say if I'm a good driver. My mind wanders a lot sometimes.
  21. Access Tutorial

I have tried using a self-teach book but it is difficult for me to set a permanent schedule to learn the program. I think I need to set a specific day each week just to learn the program. Will that work? For those who have been proficient with Access, how did you learn the program? What learning method will you recommend to learn the program quickly?
  22. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Merry Christmas to everyone! And may you all have a Prosperous New Year! To Betsy and Stephen - Happy Wedding Anniversary!
  23. New Year's resolutions, anyone?

I haven't been running that much lately. I started running 6 miles everyday last summer. Unfortunately, Portland weather is not conducive to outdoor activities. So I always use the treadmill which is not quite as fun as running on a track. So here are my plans for next year: 1. Be back on the running track 2. Take violin lessons 3. Continue eating healthy food To everyone, good luck on planning and fulfilling your New Year's resolutions. Have a Prosperous New Year!
  24. Happy Birthday to Betsy Speicher

Happy Birthday Betsy! And may you have more to come. (Picture attached is a painting entitled "Red Dahlia")
  25. How bad is soft drink?

I wonder why you did not include juice (without corn syrup or anything equivalent to it) in your list. Does it upset your stomach? As to red wine, what benefits do you get from it?
