  1. 2012 Presidential Poll for March 2012

If obamacare gets totally or partially overturned doesn't that bode well for Romney?
  2. 2012 Presidential Poll for March 2012

I am confident it will be a tight race and i think Romney will win. I think it all hinges on what people think of the economy on election day. I just hope the economy can stay weak for the next 8 months.
  3. http://blog.nj.com/njv_paul_mulshine/2012/01/the_times_admits_it_deep-sixed.html Nothing surprising, but an excellent article regardless of how you feel about Ron Paul. "When it comes to the question of ignoring Paul, the attitude of the Times editors is rooted in the idea that some things are just not discussed in polite society. It's okay for Romney or Santorum to make the assertion that he will expand the military while balancing the budget and without raising taxes. That's false but it doesn't bother the Times. However when a candidate says we can't afford to be the policeman of the world, that candidate is kept out of the news not because what he's saying is false but because it's true. If that candidate also proposes ending a whole passel of programs deemed untouchable by the Times, well that's all the more reason not to let readers hear about the guy. But Ron Paul's been the only good story in this race. His views have turned out to be popular within the Republican Party - and getting more popular by the minute. Those views are not popular with the Times crowd. But we know that from the editorials and the columns. We don't need to read it in the news section as well."
  4. It allows all the users to up and down vote posts and comments and this mechanism does a pretty great job of filtering out uninteresting content. The reddit community is a bit on the liberal side but not hugely. I would say it is far more atheist than it is liberal which is the thing i was most pleasantly surprised by. here are the top 20 most subscribed subreddits: (atheism is #17!) 5. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/01/120116095529.htm I think i pretty well understand the gist of it but its kind of impossible to wrap your head around.
  6. White Collar (TV Series 2009)

Great show. It has much in common with many of my all time favorites in that it blends comedy/mystery/drama seamlessly while still retaining a very original feel. If you seen the movie Catch Me If You Can, the premise can succinctly be described as picking up where that movie ends but the two main characters are fairly different personalities than the ones in that movie. Always entertaining and occasionally brilliant, I highly recommend it. I would recommend catching up on the first two seasons before watching the current one but you could also just read or watch summaries to save time.
  7. Covert Affairs (TV Series 2010)

I was sure it would be back. The casting and acting was so excellent it seemed almost like they didn't really have to do that great of a job on anything else to come out with a very solid show. Plus, Piper Perabo is kind of mesmerizing and her name leads to pleasant alliteration.
  8. USA in the past 5 years has dominated it making quality shows on a cable budget. These are two of my favorites and they just had their season premieres.
  9. Military Cuts!

I think the military budget is definitely bloated but the amount of bloat is minor in comparison to the rest of the budget which is 90% bloat. The preventable waste that does occur is in the form of projects that get green light due to the ability to rationalize big dollars on projects that are marginally useful at best and worthless at worst. Then there is also the tendency to treat sunk costs as relevant. Also I think there is necessarily going to be at least minor waste due to military/industrial complex effects. One good example is the Osprey tilt rotor aircraft. does it provide some significant tactical advantage? No. Is it cool? Yeah. Cost? 27 billion as of 2008. Another recent news item was when Gates admirably argued against spending an extra 2 billion dollars so you can have a second manufacturer for the Joint Strike Fighters' engines it seems as if that would likely be a complete waste given its current inferiority(at least according to Sec. Gates). Reformation of the necessarily bureaucratic structure that makes these decisions is what is need to improve the situation but improvements of that nature will surely come slowly. Here are some links about the Osprey and JSF engine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-22_Osprey http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,...1990951,00.html
  10. State of the States ... and Countries

A picture is worth a thousand words. This website is worth the Obama's speech times a trillion, or 14 trillion. http://www.usdebtclock.org/
  11. Cat Lap

I didn't applaud the cat. I booed the dog for being so stupid. And, It gets water all over the floor.
  12. Wikileaks

I have a whole bunch of mixed thoughts and emotions from what I've read. I sympathize with the idea but it seems to me he does care a bit more about self promotion than right and wrong. Certainly a great potion of what he released should have been but there must have been a way to do it more discriminatly. I was hoping some more informed members could discuss this issue for my elucidation.
  13. But, on the bright side this thing passing would likely nail the coffin in obama's reelection hopes unless palin decides to run.
  14. That would be about 220 billion for 2010 and probably a bit more in '11. is this proposal a one time deal or the world most ridiculous annuity.
  15. Wikileaks

If an illegally obtained document proves illegal activity(ignoring the fact that many of his docs do not even hint at any), is releasing said document a crime? Furthermore, I think you should elaborate on the moral laws part cause i don't understand how releasing illegally obtained documents is necessarily immoral
  16. Wikileaks

The one funny about it is that i was happy when i read it accused Hillary of illegally spying on the U.N. But then immediately respected her for taking any action against the UN which is pile crapheads. But thats a different topic.
  17. Castle (2009)

This show just keeps getting better even though it is highly formulaic the writing and acting keep it fresh and always entertaining
  18. 4 tv shows

"Bored to Death which just finished its second season on HBO. Californication about to staart its forth on Showtime. "The Defenders" currently running on cbs. And finally detroit 187 currently on abc.
  19. Thank you for this awesome and epic post. I think it is almost worth thanking inventor for spurring you to go so far in your brilliant explanation.
  20. Shadow over Asia

The other key point to make is that China was and is constantly benefiting from the theft of intellectual property. Who can estimate their gains from free pirated software and ignoring of international patents.
  21. Who Is Tim Pawlenty?

I am tentatively optimistic about the who the republican nominee will be. The ability of the tea party movement and republican bandwagoneers to get the public to focus on debt and spending and taxes was what lead to their huge gains by through convincing the moderates that the republicans are the lesser of two evils. I think the republican party will hopefully be smart enough to pick the candidate with the best chance of winning which fortunately would be one who emphasizes religion less and fiscal and freedom issues more.
  22. A Psalm of Life

Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow Find us farther than to-day. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world’s broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,–act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o’erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time;– Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. I was familiar with the famous last stanza but just read the whole thing today. Aside from the God line it is really great.
  23. Basic Concepts in Physics

I think you are looking at physics with a strange frame of reference. you are treating motion like some sort of primary and matter and forces as being just describers of motion. Think about it like this without matter there can be no motion. without a force acting upon matter there can be no motion, else what was the cause of that motion and there must be causation. So, definitionally a force is some manner in which matter interacts to alter the movement of some said matter. For if matter did not interact what would be the point of it existing? You would have a boringly static universe. In summation, motion is simply an attribute of matter that is determined by a strange set of forces, Matter and forces are not simply ways of describing motion.
  24. A little lesson in democracy

Yeah socialists and the like are just a prime example of one of mans greatest weaknesses, the uncanny ability to rationalize anything, whether by using reason or nonsense. People can convince themselves of anything if they want to hard enough.
