  1. Objectivist Dropouts

Thank you for this great essay Betsey. It answered several questions I ponder from time to time. I may not possess the qualifications to be a real Objectivist, but I am proud of myself for continuing, hopefully both rationally and objectively, my studies.
  2. This is appalling. Am I wrong or does this smack of the methods employed by the communists. Isn't the process that the school board must approve a text book before it is distributed to students? If you would like to see the 15 page story on Obama, it appears that you can order this book online. There is a note in the book that says, For more on Barack Obama, visit the Literature Center at The book is: Wisconsin - 8th grade - McDougal Littell Literature - copyright 2008. The Obama story starts on page 830. I hope you will take the time to look at this book. I'm really angry about this - in fact, I would love to rip the pages right out of this book. By the way, you might find this interesting: I did a little checking on McDougal Littell, and it appears that MCDOUGAL, ALFRED L CHICAGO , IL 60611 - N/A/RETIRED has been making contributions to Barack Obama's campaign! I found that information on this website.;first=ALFRED Now I'm not an expert at these things (just a PTA mom), but It looks to me like Alfred McDougal is connected to McDougal Littell the same company that publishes the 8th grade textbook that has 15 pages on Obama. Like I said, I'm not an expert, but I'm sure you have someone who can delve into the dirty little details. It's a given that this won't make MSM. Can the news and Obama's lack of integrity get any worse?
  3. Religion: Scourge of Humanity

Who is "they" and how do you know that no one has been harmed? The leaders to do no allow anyone - not - to prefer simplicity. You either accept their rules, or you're banished from family and friends. My father is a blue-collar Methodist, but he hasn't banished me from his life because I'm atheist. I can assure you that would not be the case in the Amish or Mennonite communities.
  4. Religion: Scourge of Humanity

I have not been around the Amish, but I did live in the mist of a large community of Mennonites and employed several. They practice an very inhuman method of banishment. If a member breaks a rule, they're completely shunned by the entire congregation. It's horrible to observe. They are only allowed to complete school to the 8th grade, and because they are not allowed to mingle outside of their group, they are the worst gossips I have ever witnessed. The evilness of their religion totally disgusts me.
  5. Art of a communist dictatorship

It immediately reminded me of the critter in Star Wars (IV?).
  6. Times may be tough, but....

Thanks, Ray that was really interesting. I feel silly that I sometimes forget to google for answers I've always wondered *why.* I guess it's a bad childhood habit - I drove my daddy crazy with "why?" He said my two first words were "why?" and "mine!" Fifty two years later, they really haven't changed.
  7. Times may be tough, but....

I'm really happy for you. You didn't by any chance have American maid on your list? I do windows!
  8. Times may be tough, but....

Why do they drive on the wrong side of the road?
  9. Imagination vs. Reality

I just noticed that if you pick 3 letters from conceptual entity, you get CAT. What if it didn't like anybody? What would you do with it?
  10. Dmitri Shostakovich

The Battleship Potemkin is presently playing on Netflix Instant, but after a few minutes I decided I wouldn't live long enough to watch the rest. It doesn't bother me to read subtitles, but it was too much with the Russian dialog also written. I knew all those sullen "we must help our comrades" faces were going to depress me. Without such knowledgeable Forum members, however, I would have missed the opportunity to watch the same shot of waves repeated 3 times. I always enjoy learning something new.
  11. A FORUM Member in the News

Smarty pants. I was too excited to notice anything but the name.
  12. A FORUM Member in the News

A moment of hope before a busted bubble. That was cruel.
  13. LGF vs. Obama vs. Palin

In response to the link at Little Green Footballs on another board, the responder wrote: I know nothing about how any of this works, but I do trust the integrity of LGF over the poster. Does anyone here have any "tracker" experience? If so, who is closer to being correct? I did read on Reuters that Palin supports teaching creationism which I find annoying that she's already expressed an opinion, if the reporter was correct, on this topic so soon.
  14. Scorpion stings

In the movie A Good Year, there were scorpions in the chateau and bundles of lavender were placed on the window sills to keep them away. I had no idea that there were scorpions in France - or Austin! I've been stung by jelly fish too. Around here we have a variety of a red wasp that is very aggressive with a potent stinger. The last time I got stung by one (I wasn't even close to the nest which was on the ceiling joist of the barn) - it popped me twice on my upper arm - a large red patch formed. About an hour later I was on my way to town and had to pull over because I couldn't hold my eyes open. I fell asleep, woke up and continued on my trip. I think I must be more allergic than as a child. It itched worse than poison ivy for several days afterwards. Hope you're feeling much better Ray. I know you're a tough Marine, but it hurt my "feelings" when I got stung - at least the sucker died! <evil grin>
  15. Science Reporting Misses

"Instinct" always bothered me. My reaction was, "What am I - a dog?" Miss Rand's explanation happily cleared up my confusion - although it still irritates me (really grates on my nerves) to hear "instinct(s)" referred to. I hear it most often in movies. I wonder why I still irritably react when I hear the word/concept?
