The Tea Party Movement Goes to Capitol Hill

22 posts in this topic

I am so excited to say that Nicolaus and I are going to be attending the 9/12 March on Washington with the Tea Party Movement.

You can check out the website at: http://912dc.org/

Yaron Brook will be speaking at the event.

Locally we have been to two tea party events and have enjoyed them both, although the groups were certainly mixed on their ideas about why the government shouldn't raise taxes and institute socialized healthcare.

We were wondering if anyone else is or would like to attend this event. We would love to get together with you, go out for dinner, or maybe even take in some sightseeing.

You can contact myself and/or Nicolaus Nemeth with your reply.

I was busy at our local Detroit-area Tea Party (where I was interviewed by a mightily irate TV reporter about "what the words on your sign mean" -- which I thought were pretty clear: IMPEACH THE MARXIST GANGSTER), so I missed this historic event.

Here's a report from http://my.earthlink.net/article/top?guid=2...909122074246488 :

Thousands of downtown DC protesters blast Obama

September 12, 2009

WASHINGTON - Tens of thousands of protesters fed up with government spending marched to the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, showing their disdain for the president's health care plan with slogans such as "Obamacare makes me sick" and "I'm not your ATM."

The line of protesters clogged several blocks near capitol, according to the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. Demonstrators chanted "enough, enough" and "We the People." Others yelled "You lie, you lie!" and "Pelosi has to go," referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Throngs of people waved U.S. flags and held signs reading "Go Green Recycle Congress" and "I'm Not Your ATM." Men wore colonial costumes as they listened to speakers who warned of "judgment day" - Election Day 2010.

Other signs - reflecting the growing intensity of the health care debate - depicted President Barack Obama with the signature mustache of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. Many made reference to Obama as a socialist or communist, and another imposed his face on that of the villainous Joker from "Batman." ...

Terri Hall, 45, of Starke, Fla., said she felt compelled to become political for the first time this year because she was upset by government spending.

"Our government has lost sight of the powers they were granted," she said. She added that the deficit spending was out of control, and said she thought it was putting the country at risk.

Race also became an issue when a black Republican leader denounced African-American politicians that she said had an "affinity" for socialism.

"I'm outraged prominent black politicians use the race card" to cover up their failed policies, said Deneen Borelli. ...

"The president has warned us if we disagree with him he's going to call us out," DeMint said. "Well, Mr. President, we are out." ...

Other sponsors of the rally include the Heartland Institute, Americans for Tax Reform and the Ayn Rand Center for Individuals Rights. ...

Those of you lucky enough to be there for this historic event ... THANK YOU, and please give us your reports!

YAHOO! I was under the impression, from the bit of coverage I caught on C-Span, that the patriots in Washington numbered only a few tens of thousands.

But Michelle Malkin reports:

12:34pm Eastern: Police estimate
1.2 million
in attendance. ABC News reporting crowd at
2 million.

Teeny, tiny fringe, huh? ...

I’ve been reading in the newspapers about how the Tea Party movement is “losing steam.” I’ve been told by my colleagues in the mainstream, lame-stream, drive-by, state-SPONSORED media that you have died.

I’ve been told by the smug vulgarians on cable TV ... and I’ve been told by the bigoted know-nothings in Hollywood (yes, that’s you Janeane Garofalo) that you all are nothing more than a teeny, tiny minority of fringe extremists.

I’ve been told that…thousands upon thousands of committed, peaceful, principled sons and daughters of liberty [do not] exist.

Well, I am happy to report to the rest of the country that you Tea Party Patriots are alive and kicking and moving full steam ahead in the common defense of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

They want you gone.

They want you silent and out of sight.

They want you marginalized, demonized, and demoralized.

Will you let them? ...

Only extreme vigilance – forceful, rabble-rousing, aggressive, unyielding vigilance, can safeguard our inalienable rights. And in practicing this extremism, we have nothing – NOTHING – to apologize for. Ever.

FREEDOM! NEVER STOP FIGHTING!

From http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/12...nment-spending/ :

The White House on Friday claimed it was unaware of the planned rally.

"I don't know who the group is," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters with a shrug.

HA! DON'T YOU WISH!

But a House leadership aide warned fellow Democrats that up to 2 million demonstrators could turn out.

"It looks like Saturday's event is going to be a huge gathering, estimates ranging from hundreds of thousands to 2 million people," Doug Thornell, an aide to Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., wrote in a memo obtained by FOXNews.com.

But conservatives believe the memo is ploy to inflate expectations for the turnout anticipating that it will fall short.

"It's an old political tactic to get out in front and make wild projections and when they're not met, claim their opponents don't have the juice," said Pete Sepp, a spokesman for the National Taxpayers Union, one of the organizers of the rally.

Only it didn't turn out to be an inflation. It turned out to be true.

FASCISTS/SOCIALIST/COMMUNIST LOOTERS IN WASHINGTON, WE ARE YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE.

AND WE'RE NOT GOING AWAY!

His selection of pictures was extremely unfair. I saw only a handful of "birthers" and religious nuts while I was there. I posted 30 pictures on my Facebook page with many wonderful signs. I'll post some of them here shortly.

Charles Johnson is rapidly sliding downhill, with many of his posts focusing on smearing all sorts of good people.

I think if you could sum up his personal philosophy in one sentence, it would be "The truth is the middle between two extremes; the moral is the middle between two extremes". The result is that he smears anyone who takes an uncompromising radical position, regardless of the content of their beliefs, while he himself settles in some kind of a bland, epistemological compromise in the middle. Of course, compromising in the middle really means that in the end he just supports and enables the real guys, and we can steadily see this when he writes posts promoting global warming or slightly defending Obama.

I'm certain you'll appreciate this: Glenn Beck covered the event on Fox News in a 2-hour special, and is likely to have had around 4.000.000 viewers. In the middle of the broadcast he put on Dr. Yaron Brook for over 4 minutes, and very respectfully debated atheism and individual rights with him. He also mentioned the term "Objectivist".

View it here. Dr. Brook appears at 2:38.

Ok, I decided the best way to share these here would be to create a Flicker account. See if you can view this: 9-12 pictures.

Great, bborg! -_- There are a couple of signs that stand out. The one with the picture of the Trojan horse and the words "The Public Option". That one is very clever! Also, “The Product Of My Life’s Work Is Not Your Slush Fund". Well said!

Yes, I agree with that analysis. I've long said he is a pragmatist. He’s hard over on not being "extreme" and I think he sometimes comes across as a bit paranoid as a result.

As you may have heard, there's controversy over how many attended. ABC News is now saying, "no, we never said 2 million."

But then, who's stupid enough, these days, to believe the MSM?

ACORN, perhaps; no one else.

Glenn Beck reports, at http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/30518/ :

The American people are waking up. It [MSM bias] doesn't matter. Even if the Washington Post wouldn't have covered it, everybody in Washington that needs to know, the people are awake, they know. It doesn't matter if it was covered at all. The people that needed to hear that message, believe me, heard the message. If you go overseas, you start to look at some real numbers, overseas the London Telegraph is now saying that the number is over a million.

CALLER: Oh, my gosh.

GLENN: They quote a source from the Park Service, the National Park Service saying that it is the largest march on Washington ever.

CALLER: Oh, my gosh.

GLENN: And they also quote somebody in the White House saying that the White House was shocked at the number. Now, you're not going to get that in the mainstream press here in America, but that's what the Daily Mail is reporting today.

Now, everybody in Washington knows, and the great thing is America now understands. America now knows that America is awake. It is the best news ever. America is awake.

So don't worry about what you see in the mainstream media. Start keeping track of who you can trust and who you can't.

Question: What scene in Ayn Rand's novels should the following remind you of?

From http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/12...nment-spending/ :

The White House on Friday claimed it was unaware of the planned rally.

"I don't know who the group is," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters with a shrug.

Answer:

From The Fountainhead:

'Who's Howard Roark?"

Ellsworth Toohey: "I wouldn't know."

... the White House was shocked at the number.

Look at all the people, in this video: http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/30493/ !

I'll bet the Messiah wet himself.

Sure, Obama, you were the smoothest con artist in your scummy little Marxist enclave in Chicago. For years you honed your skills in front of a mirror, choosing your gestures, the tone of your voice, learning how to lie more convincingly, to trick the weak-minded ... basking in the admiration of your fellow America-haters ... as you craved more power to fill the emptiness of your soul ... more power ... and more.

You even tricked enough people to end up (temporarily) in the White House. But WHAT THE HELL MADE YOU THINK YOU COULD GET AWAY WITH YOUR SCHEMES FOREVER? LOOK AT ALL OF US! Tens of millions are wising up to the fact that you're a complete fraud--our country's greatest enemy--AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO FORGET! Remember what Winston Churchill said about fighting on the beaches, fighting in the streets, and NEVER giving up?

Those were just Britons. We're AMERICANS. TOUGHER and MORE DETERMINED than they were!

A MARXIST AMERICA? You'll never see it! There are tens of millions of us standing in your way!

Massive Gathering in Washington D.C. Protests Obama Administration and the Loss of Freedom

By Randy Sly, 9/14/2009, Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Catholic Online) - The Tea Party Express Came to Washington on Saturday, with Americans assembling on the National Mall.

They came from across the entire United States to speak against the proposed reform of our health care system, the stimulus package with has placed our Nation in economic peril and other approaches of the new Obama administration.

Estimates of attendance numbers for the event, however, are all over the map.

Several news organizations reported that "thousands or tens of thousands participated". ABC News reported that the Washington DC Fire Department estimated the crowd at 60 to 70 Thousand.

The London Telegraph, however, indicated that 1.5 to 2 million people were present.

Given that authorities at the Mall were taken by surprise by the size of the crowd and the impact on Washington DC traffic, some observers have stated that the crowd had to be at least one million strong.

As with other similar gatherings such as the March for Life, accurate estimates by park officials may never be reported. However, there is little doubt that this assembly represented an historic show of opposition to the Obama admisnistration's policies. [emphasis added]

Hey, THIS sure caught my eye: at least one bloke over in the U.K. got it right. From http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/geraldwa...l_end_in_tears/ :

Barack Obama inauguration: this Emperor has no clothes, it will all end in tears

By Gerald Warner

Last updated: January 20th, 2009

This will end in tears. The Obama hysteria is not merely embarrassing to witness, it is itself contributory to the scale of the disaster that is coming. What we are experiencing, in the deepening days of a global depression, is the desperate suspension of disbelief by people of intelligence -
la trahison des clercs
- in a pathetic effort to hypnotise themselves into the delusion that it will be all right on the night. It will not be all right. ...

It is questionable whether the present political system can survive the coming crisis. Whatever the solution, teenage swooning sentimentality over a celebrity cult has no part in it. The most powerful nation on earth is confronting its worst economic crisis under the leadership of its most extremely liberal politician, who has virtually no experience of federal politics. That is not an opportunity but a catastrophe.

These are frank, even ungracious, words: they have the one merit that, unlike almost everything else written today about Obama, they will not require to be eaten in the future.

So far I haven't found the figures referred to by Glenn Beck and others, at the London Telegraph site. I've found, at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...Washington.html :

Anti-Barack Obama health care protesters pour into Washington

The protesters in the "March on Washington", organised by conservative and libertarian anti-tax groups, were spread out from the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue all the way to the capitol. Some chanted "Enough, enough" and "We the People." Others shouted out "You lie, you lie!" and "Pelosi has to go," referring to the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

One sign asked: "Congress: are you stoned or just stupid? Please wake up and save America." Another warned,
"We are under attack by our own government."
Many signs read, "Our Constitution has termites!" Other demonstrators waved US flags and held signs reading "Go Green Recycle Congress".

One warned: "Judgment day" - Election Day 2010. ... [emphasis added]

And from http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...Washington.html

Thousands of 'tea party' protesters march against Barack Obama in Washington

... the discontent ranged widely with signs proclaiming "Obamacare makes me sick" and "Bury Obamacare with Kennedy" - a reference to Senator Ted Kennedy, a staunch Obama ally who championed health-care and died of brain cancer last month.

Home-made placards declared: "Born free, taxed to death", "King George Didn't Listen Either!" and "Vote Out All Incumbent Crooks".

One teenager carried a scrawled sign that read: "Do I 'look' like I want to 'serve' in Obama's Nazi Youth militia? Arrest our Communist, Fascist, Racist, Lying, President NOW for Treason!!"

I agree.

Organisers included FreedomWorks, led by Dick Armey, a former Republican leader on Capitol Hill who helped bring down President Bill Clinton's health-care bill in 1994. Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, also a conservative Republican, demanded a return to "constitutional government" and insisted that it was "time that the president started listening to us".

There was no official crowd count. Organisers, who had expected between 25,000 and 50,000, put the total at 75,000 but many estimated that it was much higher.

The demonstration dwarfed a rally held by Mr Obama in Minneapolis ...

One of the heroes of the Washington demonstration was Representative Joe Wilson, who shouted out "You Lie!" at Mr Obama last Wednesday after the President stated that it was false that illegal immigrants could benefit from health insurance under the terms of his plan.

When Mr Armey stated that Mr Obama had "pledged a commitment of fidelity to the United States Constitution" there were shouts of "Liar! Liar!"

AS WELL THERE SHOULD BE!

Celebrating the 9/12 rallies; Turnout estimated at 2 million;

Update: How many?; FreedomWorks in error

By Michelle Malkin • September 12, 2009 10:06 AM

... Update: Tabitha Hale says Parks & Rec estimated 1.2 million. An ABC News correspondent says it wasn’t national ABC News network that reported 2 million figure. I take them at their word — and am checking to find out more info.

and some cheeky person dares to repeat these words from the 1964 bob Dylan song, as though they were not the personal property of the left:

Come senators, congressmen

Please heed the call

Don’t stand in the doorway

Don’t block up the hall

For he that gets hurt

Will be he who has stalled

There’s a battle outside

And it is ragin’.

It’ll soon shake your windows

And rattle your walls

For the times they are a-changin’.

From http://hotair.com/archives/2009/09/12/how-...comment-page-2/ :

Update: However big it was, it was bigger than expected. From the NYT: “Many came on their own and were not part of an organization or group. But the magnitude of the rally took the authorities by surprise, with throngs of people streaming from the White House to Capitol Hill for more than three hours.”

His smearing is getting worse, as his posts now routinely focus disproportionately on the irrational fringe groups that are attending the tea party. He's turning into a well oiled, context-dropping, concrete-bound, guilt by association smear machine.

I was at the 9/12 March and Protest in Washington on Saturday and shot numerous pictures. About 125 photos are online. The link is http://912dc.dhwritings.com. I made a point of showing a variety of the messages written on signs. Those naysayers who claim that the attendees were all of one mindset and that the mindset was mindlessly hate-Obama, aren't going by what is obvious in the facts. Anyone reading this who would like to forward the link to any disbelieving acquaintances so that they can see past what was in the major media, has my approval to forward the link.

You'll see in the pictures that Objectivists were there. In addition, there were signs carried by people promoting "Atlas Shrugged" in a positive way. I write "in addition," because several may be fans of the novel without being Objectivists. Either way, they promoted a worthy message.

As for the question several people have been asking here (as well as elsewhere): "How many people were at the march and rally?" I would like to be able to tell you. Like so many others who was both there and who knows the DC landscape, the number has to be at least in six digits. Other than that, I'll continue to read intelligently-deducted analysis and look at crowd-overview photos as they become available. Just so everyone knows before they visit my linked page: I don't have expansive crowd shots. I simply didn't shoot any.
