RECREATION

2 posts in this topic

Ayn Rand says that art is, “a selective recreation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value-judgments".

The term "recreation" is apparently an Aristotelian concept that refers to a re-integration of ideas that are then portrayed in a work of art.

The concept of recreation is apparently held in opposition to the Platonic idea of art wherein the work portrays an imitation, or representation, of something in reality.

What is recreation?

What is being portrayed when something is being recreated?

Is the thing that is recreated an idea? An emotion? A normative concept? A cognitive concept? A moral ought? An emotion?

Is recreation representational, for example, as in sculpture or novels? Or is recreation non-representational, for example, as in architecture and music?

I really wonder what is being recreated in music. I suppose that it has to be some mental process, some action of (human) consciousness? Can it have something to do with how we form concepts? (just speculating)
