Margaret Price, 1941-2011

The marvelous Welsh soprano, Margaret Price (no relation to the American soprano, Leontyne Price), has died. Miss Price possessed a voice of great size, great ease of production, beautiful clarity and purity. This combination of qualities made her a perfect singer for the works of Mozart in particular, and it is as a superlative Mozart singer that Miss Price will most likely be best remembered.

The singer died one day after the 255 anniversary of Mozart's birth.

Here is Miss Price performing what I've always found to be a most unusual choice for a voice of her type: Mozart's beautiful but fiendishly difficult and HIGH concert aria Vorrei spiegarvi, o Dio!. Unusual though it is, this performance also brings out all the qualities that made Miss Price so special and is one of the best recordings of this aria in the catalog.

I heard about this just last night. It is very sad. She was a wonderful singer, as you say, V. The Mozart concert aria is a great selection to commemorate her. She characteristically attacks every note dead center, effortlessly, with great sensitivity. She was a wonderful singer and kept her repertoire to the things that she sang best, especially Mozart. A great role model for singers and a great loss.
