Sea Drift (1933/42)

1 post in this topic

Here is an orchestral tone poem composed by American neo-Romantic composer, John Alden Carpenter, entitlted Sea Drift. The work, originally completed in 1933 and then revised somewhat in 1942, reflects the direction and focus of Carpenter's overall musical style, his brilliant handling of orchestration and a general rejection of the modernist atonal and polytonal trends. This is also one of Carpenter's works that does not incorporate the Tin Pan Alley/Ragtime/Jazz element that had been a prominent feature in many of his earlier compositions. Sea Drift serves as an interesting contrast with Carpenter's earlier and more well-known work, Skyscrapers.
