Norman Dello Joio

1 post in this topic

Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer, Norman Dello Joio, completed his Triumph of St. Joan Symphony in 1951. This symphony is a reworking of thematic material from the composers 1950 3-act opera of the same title. Although the opera was well-received, Mr. Dello Joio was unhappy with the work and, having recast it in this symphonic format, withdrew it. I find this symphony to be both beautiful and emotionally powerful. In addition to having a certain cinematic quality, it is a work that is representative of a thoroughly American neo-Romantic style.
