Summer Music, Part 4

At one time, Ferde Grofe's colorful Grand Canyon Suite seemed to be ubiquitous on the concert scene, and not only as part of Pops Orchestra offerings. In recent decades, however, the work that made Ferde Grofe's name (and that is arguably his finest accomplishment) has gone somewhat out of fashion. How sad, given the fact that with the Grand Canyon Suite, Grofe was able to achieve a marvelous musical evocation of the wide open spaces, precipitous drops, stunning plateaus and glorious majesty of one of America's most spectacular natural attractions.

Enjoy!

I remember hearing this in several concert series when I was a kid, I think once conducted by Elmer Bernstein in the San Fernando Valley, not quite the canyon ambience, but, a minute or two into it and you'd swear you were there. A wonderfully evocative orchestral tone poem.
