This is Ed Cline's first totally NEW fiction since writing the acclaimed Sparrowhawk series, on the American Revolution!

Cyrus Skeen, San Francisco’s top private eye in the Roaring Twenties, returns from his escapades in China Basin and Head of Athena for a third intriguing, fast-paced adventure.

This time, he’s hired by the semi-scandalous Daedalus Society, to head off possible mischief at their annual encampment among California’s redwood forests. Skeen finds the society a distasteful gaggle of Babbitts; he aptly describes the motley crowd of Progressive senators, congressmen, bankers, cabinet members, professors, bond salesmen, and businessmen as

"this mass convocation of disparate souls seeking refuge from their own lives ... confessing a very serious and dangerous dichotomy and conflict. Or, perhaps it was an emptiness that could be filled only by the presence of others.”

Against this seemingly banal background, Skeen confronts several assassination attempts and other carnage. What’s the motive for the violence? Skeen doesn’t know. But there are tantalizing clues: many of the attendees are hostile to limited government, support the corrupt, destructive Federal Reserve, and approve of Congress wreaking havoc on the no-longer free market. This is a few weeks before the 1929 Stock Market Crash, and one senses an ominous connection … These threads, at the end of Part I, are left unconnected … to be tied together by the intrepid detective in Part II.

Ed Cline has given us explosive climaxes before, that blow the evil-doers' schemes sky-high in sight of the whole world -- in the must-read Merritt Fury novel We Three Kings and the grim Chess Hanrahan whodunnit Presence of Mind. I suspect he's going to do the same here -- and that what he exposes about the Stock Market Crash will be highly relevant to the current destruction of America by its own government.

The author says we can expect the second half of the novel around December.
