I was under the impression that Objectivism regarded photography as a craft rather than an art, since it's not technically a selective recreation of reality according to the artist's metaphysical value judgements.

I was under the impression that Objectivism regarded photography as a craft rather than an art, since it's not technically a selective recreation of reality according to the artist's metaphysical value judgements.

The "Useful Arts," like the ones in the subtitle of this forum ("Photography and Illustration, Design, Decoration, Fashion"), are not arts in the literal esthetic sense, but rather technical crafts that can have strong artistic elements. As opposed to, say, a more strictly technical craft, like the shoemaker who fixes shoes, or the clockmaker who fixes clocks.
