Posted 25 Dec 2012 · Report post One fiercely anti-mysticism movie. The most blunt movie I have seen on this subject. Who else saw it and liked it?
Posted 26 Dec 2012 · Report post I have not seen The Grey, but would like to. The idea intrigues me: A man with knowledge and skill of the Arctic wild and whose wife has passed away is stranded in the frozen wilderness with co-workers who must rely on him to help them fend off ravenous wolves. The only problem is that this man does not seem to have anything to live for anymore and is suicidal. Why should he help these men survive? Do I have the story right? It looks like a good film. Do you think it would have some things to say to psychotherapists treating patients for depression?
Posted 27 Dec 2012 · Report post The movie is about a man's rediscovery of his will to live. He does not think he has nothing to live for by the end of the movie. He stops being suicidal at the beginning of the film. You seem to have gotten some wrong information about the story; enjoy the film and let me know what you think of it once you see it, ok? Posted 27 Dec 2012 · Report post Oh yeah, and don't miss the scene after the end credits. The movie's last scene is after the end credits.
Posted 29 Dec 2012 · Report post The Edge (1997), also a survival movie, is another such "anti-mysticism" movie, or a movie about not suspending reason in moments of crisis. Only, I remember The Edge delving deeper into philosophical issues than The Grey. If I am mistaken, at least it had many pro-reason quotes in it. It also features a successful businessman as the protagonist.Darrell, why didn't you start this thread in the Movie Review section? http://forums.4aynrandfans.com/index.php?showforum=

Members can always suggest a poll / review thread, but I only set one up when enough members have seen a film to have meaningful poll results.

He just decided to keep on living. The most enjoyable part of the movie was Ottway(Liam Neeson). He has a very strong and masculine presence, with a take charge attitude and a ruthless adherence to reality. After they crash he immediatley starts to gather the other survivors, get the things they need and make plans to get out of there alive. He's the guy with the plan, although uncertain, and the competence to execute it. The others follow him as a natural leader(but with tensions within the group, of course). If you like Liam Neeson(I certainly do) this is well worth your time. This is not the greatest movie ever made, but it's a good survival movie with a strong lead actor.
