Posted 29 Jan 2013 · Report post A soldier who lost all 4 limbs (and survived) has received a double arm transplant. See: http://www.medicalne...cles/255575.php This is beyond amazing. It is f**king amazing! When I heard this, I realize I heard something more important than what I heard when Neil Armstrong stepped of the ladder.... There may be bad stuff happening in the world, but do not let it blind you to the amazing good stuff that happens. ruveyn
Posted 30 Jan 2013 · Report post This is only the beginning with a retrofit. Wait until you see the turmoil it brings as the techniques expand. Criminals will be exploiting it to get around their unique finger prints. Demagogs will be spreading more damage through excessive arm waving. There will have to be psychiatric exams, background checks, and a national database listing all those with arms. The poor will demand a right to more arms, but it won't be limited to human arms -- they will also want a right to bear arms. It won't end until there is comprehensive arms control and we are worse off than now: no one will have arms.

What we have is a man with no limbs who now has two limbs. Rejoice! Even if it is for the moment.Shall we begrudge every good that exists simply because it can be ill used? ruveyn

It may be some other person that has a self. Ruveyn reminds me of the type of person that Leonard Peikoff discusses in his Understanding Objectivism lectures. Posted 31 Jan 2013 · Report post Where's the "waterness" in a gas comprised of separate hydrogen and oxygen molecules? Can you "see" it?Let's say you were in a tightly sealed container and an elemental analysis could be performed on the constituents of your body. Now let's say you died in that tightly sealed container and the elemental analysis performed 100 years later. There won't be a difference if it remains sealed. But there's surely a difference between life and death. It's more than merely the individual atoms. Materialism is *not* an adequate description of reality.

Then the argument would continue ad nauseam.

Posted 1 Feb 2013 · Report post Consciousness IS the mind. If you accept one, you must accept the other. My consciousness is an electro chemical process taking place in my brain. I have seen it in motion and living color, by means of a PET scan. Have you seen your mind lately?. Have you had independent witnesses. I and several technicians saw my brain in operation producing what some call consciousness. I believe things and processes that can be seen, witnessed and measured precisely. What do you believe?ruveyn

Those who exploit asparagus addiction as an excuse can be like that. I have never hired anyone to do my applied math, engineering and science for me, and never hired the equivalent of a robotic idiot savant to do anything. Obnoxious, repetitive irrelevancy and boasting while understanding nothing is not genius; it's subnormal but such creatures can have their use as a cog in the wheel if they are tolerable at all. Productivity and intelligence does not require pursuit of obnoxious behavior. "One percenters" like that can't and don't produce 50% of anything; they do what they're told in a cubicle, but he probably did more than the image he wants to project. It's now even less, out to pasture munching asparagus alongside the cows while repetitively grasping for attention in the name of genius and expecting us to be gullible enough to take his evasively repetitive non-understanding pretending to be superior seriously. You also evade that when saw your brain functioning and producing consciousness, you were viewing it with that consciousness which is the mind. The mind is your consciousness, and if you are aware you are conscious, then you are aware you have a mind. Go ahead and evade some more, but don't call yourself rational in this regard.
