A Steven Weinberg quote

4 posts in this topic

The physicist Stephen Wienberg said: Good people have always done good things and evil people have always done evil things. But to make good people do evil things, you need religion.

So true.

Putting aside the facts that once people do evil things, they cannot be considered "good" and that Stephen Wienberg does not define the good, so he may be a subjectivist. With that stated, he obviously forgot to look at Russia, China and many other communist hell holes of the last century as a lot of "non-religious" people did very evil things.

A steadfast devotion to a political doctrine which ignores fact and subjects human beings to destruction is functionally indistinguishable from a religion with devout fanatic followers - Islam for example. Think of China during Mao's Great Purge and Great Leap Forward. A Martian could not tell the difference between that and the Crusades of European fanatics in the Holy Land.

I am not the one that is claiming that the people in communist societies (especially it's leaders) are not mystic, it is Stephen Wienberg that fails to recognize it, at least publically in his quote from above.
