New "You Rate It" categories

I think a Non-Fiction and Music You Rate It forums would be appreciated. I occasionally get a stab to put in non-fiction, but I really want to just put stuff about music much more often than not. Most music is an excellent standpoint to discuss philosophy, since most artists always find a way to imbue their beliefs within their lyrics, or even in their instrumentals(although I find that harder to tell, but on occasion it is clear cut). Especially the lyrics, or with such bands that write a lot otherwise, such as The White Stripes who have some brilliant illuminating pieces written by Jack in album booklets or on their website.

I would also think a Non-Fiction section would be nice since I find myself reading that more than I do Fiction. I believe it may already be suggested... It would also provide grounds to put writings of Aristotle and Plato as well as other philosophers of that order.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We previously discussed the idea of a non-fiction rating forum. I already committed to adding it, and will do so shortly. I do like the idea of a music rating forum and would be interested if others would find it of value too.

I have been deliberating about this for some time, perhaps for much too long. One thing clear to me is the need to separate the music ratings into categories. Just very general categories, not fine tuning. Something like:

- Classical

- Popular

- Rock

Ideas? Suggestions?

I think that the choices for categories will become more apparent after a few music recommendations have been submitted.

I was wondering why this is clear to you. I note that we do not have categories for the movie, book, and TV show rating forums. We do have fiction vs. non-fiction forums, but that's a very easy categorization, whereas categorizing music is too often much more difficult than that, even on a very general level.

- Classical

- Popular

- Rock

There are numerous groups that I like that could fall into both classical and rock, or both rock and popular.

Just as the reviewers state in the movie forum what kind of movie it is that they are reviewing (comedy, documentary, etc.), I would think the reviewers could do that in a music forum as well, without the need for pre-set categories.

I suspect that the number of musical songs/albums that the average member has listened to and/or owned, far far exceeds the number of books read, or movies or TV shows seen. Witness the memory capacity for the all-popular Ipods. With this volume in mind, I also suspect that classical music represents a relatively small percentage of our average enthusiast here, and I do not want classical music to be lost among a deluge of rock ratings and reviews.

We could have classical vs. non-classical forums, and then deal with whatever borderline cases arise. Or, we could have a forum for music made before, say, 1950, and then a forum for music made after 1950. I just wanted to caution against having multiple forums for general genres of music, as I do not see how it would be fruitful. In order to avoid grouping music together that doesn't belong, we would have to have more than a few categories, and even still I can think of many borderline cases arising, even if I restrict myself to music that people have expressed on THE FORUM that they enjoy. I'm not saying this would be a disaster or anything, of course; I just wanted to raise a warning before we proceeded any further, in case the above concerns had not occurred to you.

I appreciate the input, and I welcome the same from others. I have not yet decided on how to handle the details, but I think the music rating forum(s) are long overdue. So, anyone with an interest, please feel free to speak up.

Would it be worth having a "You Rate It" category for non-musical recordings? I'm thinking specifically of recorded lectures of the type I might buy from the Ayn Rand Bookstore, but the category could include other recordings as well. Audio books would probably go under the appropriate categories for fiction and non-fiction books, but there are many recorded lectures that I don't see as fitting under the existing categories.

I thought of this while browsing ARB's sale on Leonard Peikoff's lectures. I would find ratings of these lectures helpful as there are many I would like to buy, but I can't afford them all at once.

Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestion. I think including voice lectures for rating is a good idea. But, to accommodate the lectures I am inclined to change the current category of "Non-Fiction Book Ratings & Reviews" to something like "Non-Fiction Book and Lecture Ratings & Reviews."

I am open to arguments for a separate rating forum or for inclusion in the forum I have indicated, or any alternatives.

I strongly agree with this. Some of the lectures at the Ayn Rand Bookstore sound like they would be very helpful but they cost so much that, to purchase, I would need to see some reviews. Can this category be made?

Due to overwhelming popular demand, I will be setting up a "You Rate It" forum for lectures. In addition, I will be consolidating the various "Add ____ for rating" forums into one forum.
