Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post #4 Has to be Democritus. Go ahead bust my atoms. Democritus it is, James. 5 more B-Day points for you. Now all we have left is 16 and 23.
Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post Is 16 Pausanus? I don't know where that name came from. It just flew into my head. You must have divined it. But, no, it is not Pausanus. We still need 16 and 23.

Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post Then, thanking B. Royce, perhaps #23 is Xenophanes.I'm afraid Bryan cannot say "your welcome" yet. But, you have definitely moved in the right direction, from one point of view.16 and 23 still remain to be identified.

I believe I've used up my guesses for #23, so , considering Stevens expertise in Mathematics, I'll guess Pythagoras for # 16. And where did you get those photos? We still need 16 and 23. And where did you get those photos? When the game is over, I'll give due credit.

Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post Okay, it is BIG hint time (We have to finish this while it is still Alex's birthday! )I have often cited 16 in reference to the plenum, and though 23 is listed here last, he is elsewhere listed first. Everyone gets three additional guesses for each of 16 and 23.
Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post I have often cited 16 in reference to the plenum, ...I sadly don't recall the references, but given the alphabetical position and what sounds like some relevance, I would guess Parmenides for 16.

Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post Alex, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! What a miracle that two men were still left unguessed, after me coming at the very end of the day!I won't answer the last one, as I inadvertently stumbled upon it. Hint for everyone: just like Stephen says, do not use the computer to in regards to these men! Or you may have to grudgingly submit to your honest bone, at no longer being able to say the answer even if you might have yourself been able to guess it otherwise (as I did). But for the #16 one, four guesses from me:1) Parmenides2) Anaximander3) Anaximenes4) Not needed, I'm pretty sure it's Parmenides
Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post I sadly don't recall the references, but given the alphabetical position and what sounds like some relevance, I would guess Parmenides for 16."Nor is there any more of it here than there, to hinder it from holding together, nor any less of it, but it is all a plenum, full of what-is. Therefore, it is all continuous, for what-is touches what-is." (←)Congratulations, Phil. Parmenides it is. 5 points for you.Now all we have left is 23, and since it is approaching midnight by the birthday boy's clock, if no one gets 23 in the next 10 minutes, I will make it known. (The hint I gave for 23 was substantial.)

Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post Not needed, I'm pretty sure it's Parmenides Correct, but a bit too late. To Phil goes the honor.
Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what Thales looks like, but is #23 Thales?Hallelujah! What a way to end this game. Thales himself guesses that the image is of Thales, but Thales does not know what Thales looks like! We couldn't have made up a better ending. Thanks, Thales, and the last 5 points, quite appropriately, goes to you.

Posted 9 Jun 2006 · Report post Now that the game is over, I wanted to thank everyone for their birthday wishes! And, of course, thanks again to Stephen for a most clever and most enjoyable version of "Who looks like this ... in Philosophy." P.S. - Coincidentally, Round #14 of the actual "Who said this" game is tomorrow night. So, I hope everyone hasn't had their fill of guessing just yet!
