Old thread, but I wanted to add that this is one of my favorite movies. Frankly, it blew me away, because while all of the Bond movies have impressive openers, this one delivered throughout. From beginning to end I was riveted. Also, I thought Craig and the writing was excellent. I've only read a couple of the books, but one thing I really enjoyed in them was how masterful the character is in all things (from driving to withstanding torture) and has very peculiar and refined tastes in everything. He is a blend of masculinity and style you don't typically see in heroic characters. But at the same time, you get the idea in the film that he is just coming into his own and becoming the man we know. The line, "Do I look like I give a damn" on whether he wants his drink shaken or stirred, and Vesper dressing him (basically impugning his taste) I interpreted to be specific to this prequel Bond. He also is not as controlled, often letting his emotions getting the best of him (such as in the opening scene). You don't see the "mature", cool and calculating Bond until that last scene, and I got chills when I saw it.

Casino Royale had the style of the previous films, with better, deeper characters and none of the cheesy cliches (I get so tired of the constant puns and gadgets). Also, Eva Green was incredibly sexy in the role of Vesper, and not your token Bond girl. The movie smashed the lazy formula of Bond films, distilling down to the essentials everything that makes the series so entertaining. Love it. B)

I have not seen the film but the David Arnold score is superb. Suspenseful or epic film music that fit particular scenes is easily had since it is usually formulaic, but a score that is satisfying on every level of orchestral appreciation is a rarity. I enjoyed the juicy brasses and romantic breadth and subtleties of African Rundown, Miami International, Solange, I'm the Money, Aston Montenegro, Vesper, City of Lovers, and The Name's Bond...James Bond.

I cannot recommend Casino Royale highly enough. I didn't care to see it when it came out, but a friend, and Bond fan, recently insisted that I had to see it, and loaned me the DVD. Holy cow! I wouldn't have thought anyone could come close to Connery, but Craig arguably surpasses him! And the story, action, and fantastic development of Bond's relationship with Vesper -- unbelievable! This is hands down the best Bond movie, and the second best isn't even close. Now I can't wait for Quantum of Solace, coming in Novermber.
