Quote Codes

With the new upgrade, there appears to be only one way to add quotes: a button that automatically puts the beginning and end quote at the same time [ quote][/ quote]. (I added the space so it would print the code.) I liked it better when I could just add a beginning quote, type what I wanted, and then add an end quote code. Is there a way to bring this back, or is it just something I'm going to have to get used to working with?

I never used the automatic quoting in the older software, so until you mentioned it here I wasn't aware that it is different in the new version. Unfortunately, I am almmost positive that things like that are hard-coded in the software, and poking around I have not found any option where I can control it. Sorry.

However, I have a suggestion that may or may not be helpful. An alternative way is to just type away with the text you want to quote, and when you are done just highlight all the text with the cursor so that when you click on the automatic quote the text will be surrounded by the starting and ending quote pair. Just a thought.

I just hate when updates make things more difficult. Guess I'll have to live with reality!! :)

How do you divide up a quote to insert your comment (like I did here). I put an open quote code at the beginning of the next paragraph (before "However") and a close quote at the end of the previous paragraph (after "Sorry"). This splits the quote. Now, I have to insert both and then delete one of them at each location.

However, I have a suggestion that may or may not be helpful. An alternative way is to just type away with the text you want to quote, and when you are done just highlight all the text with the cursor so that when you click on the automatic quote the text will be surrounded by the starting and ending quote pair. That is good with short quotes, but it becomes inconvenient when the quote runs passed the available box for typing text. Also, when copying and pasting a news story, now it will take an extra step to put the entire pasting into quotes, unless I first click on the quote code icon and insert the story between the two codes.

Doesn't yours space down as you drag your cursor towards the last line shown? Mine does. (I'm using Firefox.)

This last seems like the easiest way, don't you think? Just two clicks -- one to quote, and one to paste.

Yes, but I like to see the entire selected area so that I can make sure I have selected the correct text. Sometimes, I've found that I've missed a letter or a paragraph. I'm sure that when I get used to it, it won't be much of a problem.

I'd still like to know how you divide up a quote to put comments. As I mentioned in my previous post. Do you use another technique from what I do?

----------------

PS: The new upgrade still doesn't copy quotes within quotes with proper attribution when replying. Any idea about fixing this?

I usually just type the quote commands myself.

I have the software set to allow only one level of quoting, because the alternative would lead to huge posts with too many levels of quoting.

But, unfortunately, sometimes, the single-level quoting includes some text that does not belong to the member being quoted. This is certainly annoying, and I have had to delete quite a few posts (I don't catch them all) for this error in attribution.

When using our past incarnations of the software, I submitted tickets about this problem several times, and the last response indicated that it would be fixed in the next version. But, here we are, in the next version, and sometimes it still occurs. So, thanks for the reminder and prompting me; I will submit a new ticket on this problem and, hopefully, maybe this time it will be fixed.

Paul, if you can point to a particular post where this problem occurs when replying, I will use that one as an example.

I've become pretty good at catching the problem before posting by using the preview post button. So I'll give you an example when I hit the reply botton to Post 4 above.

This is how it appears in the Reply Box (I put a space in the code so it is visible):

[ quote name=Stephen Speicher' date='Mar 1 2007, 01:08 PM' post='50268]

That is good with short quotes, but it becomes inconvenient when the quote runs passed the available box for typing text.

[ /quote]

The sentence "That is good with short quotes, but it becomes inconvenient when the quote runs passed the available box for typing text" should be attributed to me from Post 3.

Paul, in the long-run I think this new feature will fix more problems, though it may cost some convenience. One of the prevalent problems with forums is a mismatch of starting and ending quotes, i.e.

[ QUOTE]

This is some text

[ /QUOTE]

[ /QUOTE]

This looks ugly, though usually fixable by editing your post and fixing the problem; but of course editing cannot be done here. One solution to all problems of this type is to take extra time and extra caution when posting anything, but since it's not a habit encouraged on the Internet, a way to immediately create a closing tag for everything should lessen mismatch problems for those who wish to quickly jot off a post.

And I appreciate that. It is no fun having to delete a post and send a message to the poster.

So I'll give you an example when I hit the reply botton to Post 4 above.

Yes, that sure shows the problem. Yet, here is a doubly quoted post for which if you attempt to reply, no error occurs. (For everyone, please do not actually reply to that post.)

Puzzling. Perhaps it has something to do with the location of the inner quote. Near the top vs. near the bottom??? Is there anyway to reverse engineer this problem? Can you or anyone access the codes after it has been posted to see if something is dropping out or being added?

I just realized that this may not work, because the problem is observed in the Preview mode also, before posting. So something may be happening between the reply window and the posting of the post.

I don't know, but I think I reduced the problem to its simplest form. See the next post.

Try it with the b above the a quote. And I'll reply to that one.

I'm not sure what you mean. But, below is exactly how the post was written, only with blanks inserted now so as to stop it from functioning as a quote. You can change it however you like, and then reply to it. I'll watch. :)

Here's how it looks when I hit reply. See if it works the same for you. It seems like we've figured out where the problem is that's causing the misattribution. You need a word (or maybe a space) between two consecutive quote codes.

Yes, it works the same for me. But, the way you changed the original changes the meaning of the tiered quotes, right? It is supposed to work the way it was originally specified.

I put a space betweent the 1st and second open quote codes. ([ quote] [ quote]a[ /quote]b[ /quote]c )

Let me see if this works when I reply to it.

Here's one with a character between the first and second open quote codes.

This reply was to the above post, with spaces separating the quote commands and the letters (at least in the "preview"). So I don't think the spaces matter.

Nope. Now I'm confused.

Nope. Now I'm confused.

Which is probably the same reason why the bug has persisted this long. :)

Hopefully the software developers who wrote the code will figure it out now. They can read this thread.

Bedtime. :)

More tomorrow.

I hope we made some progress that the experts can figure out what to do.
