2-minute video - primer on Free-Market Economics

18 posts in this topic

Here's a YouTube "Killing the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg" contest, set up by Newt Gingrich, to explain the American Free Enterprise System to kids. It has to be so simple that even a Congressman could understand it (the kids should have less trouble). For those with video chops, or animation abilities, here, it might be worthwhile.

How would you present Capitalism, to elementary school kids, in 2 minutes?

I am TOTALLY gonna do this. I'll start working on it when I get home from work at midnight and I'll let you guys know when I'm done.

I guess I'm supposed to add it to this youtube group. I can't believe there's only one video there so far!

I don't know if the trouble is this end, but it just won't load past the introduction. :)
Sometimes it acts funny if you try to view it right after I uploaded it. Hopefully it works now.

You've got a real talent for this sort of thing! A sixth grader should have no problem, not so sure about members of Congress, however.

The only thing I question is the terminology here:

"They steal from the minds (businessmen) and give to the muscles (workers)"

To me that's Marxist terminology. Businessmen work and workers think. I'm guessing you meant it to represent just such a view (the socialist view), but it might too strongly get across the point that this is the way to view the business world, and if I'm an employee, then I'm just muscle. The best businessmen work and think hard, and the best workers work and think hard.

I love that you're doing this!

Yes, the Lions do suck. :)

Oh I definitely agree, but I'm talking about fundamentals. The people at the "top" contribute more intellectual capital compared to those who do manual labor. It's impossible to be purely "mind" or purely "muscle," of course.

Is there a way I can view all the videos you have created with one search on YouTube? Possibly with a name search?

Hi Sunzi, thanks. My sig has a link to my youtube profile which has my videos - only three so far but I'll be doing more in the future.

Well, Oakes, your competition just got that much greater. I've decided I'm going in the contest! I'll reply back with my submission. :)

That should give you quite a bit of publicity, congratulations. Your original link points to his contest announcement - what's the current link to your video?

I had a lengthy conversation with a science fiction writer and Civil War historian/professor a few years ago, who's a good friend of Newt Gingrich (I think they even co-wrote a book.) The writer is a really good guy (and can write a good story), but it is very frustrating that he and Gingrich and other Republicans (e.g. Limbaugh) who are otherwise decent people, have been so deeply indoctrinated in Christianity that it's unlikely that anything could ever reach them on a fundamental level that contradicts the mysticism and altruism - and as long as that's the case, they will be ineffective as real defenders of capitalism, as history keeps showing.

If they act as enablers for Objectivists to spread those ideas though, then that's not a bad thing, nor is that a factor to be lightly dismissed.

Damn! That's Excellent! Congratulations, Oakes! :o

Do you get to wear a tiara and speak to Rotary Clubs, 'n stuff?

It's nice to know that clean, compelling writing and presentation of objective truth is recognized by anyone in politics.
