Ain't It a Pretty Night!

1 post in this topic

This beautiful aria, "Ain't It a Pretty Night!", is from the opera Susannah by the American composer Carlisle Floyd. It is one of the most soaring expressions of the peculiarly American longing for adventure, discovery and of moving out into the world that I have heard on an opera stage. It is sung in the first act of the opera by the title character who, trapped in the foothills of Appalachia (Tennessee) and by the religious hypocrisy of her neighbors, ultimately refuses to "repent" in defiance of them.

In this clip, Renee Fleming (incidentally, quite radiantly advanced in her second pregnancy), lets her luxurious lyric soprano sail to the rafters.
