Posted 4 Nov 2008 · Report post Happy Birthday, Brian!!! Poetry is not my strong suit, but I do love your poems so much I wanted to share something with you. Instead of my own, I'll share one by one of my favorite poets.Gifts May these be yours...The gifts that make the Dreamers into Doers,The Gift to workThrough joy and sorrow, light and murk. The play, with all your soul and heart,A Manly part. The Gift of Discontent, to keep you DrivingForward and up, forever strivingFor something better in the days hereafter,The Gift of Kindness, and the Gift of Laughter. And all the Gifts of Love, and Faith, and Friends of Justice and of TruthAnd in your heart, until life's long journey endsThe Priceless Gift of YouthYouth and its ageless courage that endures,May all these Gifts be Yours
Posted 4 Nov 2008 · Report post Happy Birthday! I have been saving this one for you.Uplift am I? When first in store the new-made beasties stood,Were Ye cast down that breathed the Word declarin' all things good? Not so! O' that warld-liftin' joy no after-fall could vex,Ye've left a glimmer still to cheer the Man--the Arrtifex! That holds, in spit o' knock and scale, o' friction, waste an' slip,An' by that light--now, mark my word--we'll build the Perfect Ship.Rudyard Kipling, "M'Andrew's Hymn"

Posted 4 Nov 2008 · Report post A very, very happy birthday to you, Brian! I do hope this is a little music you might enjoy on this special day -- a performance of Gremin's aria (Eugene Onegin) by the late, great Nicolai Ghiaurov. Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin -- Gremin's Aria (Act III)Nicolai Ghiaurov, BassLove is no respecter of age, its transports bless alike those in the bloom of youth yet unacquainted with the world and the grey-headed warrior tempered by experience! Onegin, I shan't disguise the fact that I love Tatyana to distraction! My life was slipping drearily away; she appeared and brightened it like a ray of sunlight in a stormy sky, and brought me life and youth, yes, youth and happiness! Among these sly, poor-spirited, foolish, pampered children, these scoundrels both absurd and boring, dull, fractious arbiters, among the pious coquettes and sycophantic slaves, amid affable, modish hypocrisy courteous, affectionate infidelities, amid the icy censure of cruel-hearted vanity, amid the vexing vacuity of calculation, thought and conversation, she shines like a star in the night's darkest hour, in a pure, clear sky, and to me she always appears in the radiant, radiant nimbus of an angel! Love is no respecter of age, its transports bless alike those in the bloom of youth yet unacquainted with the world and the grey-headed warrior tempered by experience! Posted 4 Nov 2008 · Report post Happy Birthday, Brian!! Incidentally--have you recorded any readings of your poetry? I remember when you read/sang your poem about "Profit...profit...profit!!" at the Objectivist Club meeting in Sacramento years ago. ("Awake, awake, awake am I"...I loved it!)
